Oxygen is one of the most essential things your body needs in order to function. When your body does not get enough oxygen, anoxia hypoxia causes devastating effects on your life and your health. By definition, both anoxia and hypoxia are caused by your body or part of your body lacking the oxygen it needs.
Whereas anoxia occurs when that part of your body has no oxygen at all, hypoxia is less severe and is caused when your body has less oxygen than it needs. In either case, it’s very important that the person quickly restores oxygen to the part of the body that needs it. There are many obvious anoxia hypoxia causes such as strangulation or drowning, but there are also many other things that can result in a lack of oxygen.
Anoxia and Hypoxia Causes in the Brain
Though both health problems can occur in any part of your body, they are typically caused by a lack of oxygen in your brain. This is because your brain uses up 20% of the oxygen in your body, and if you are not breathing in enough oxygen, your brain is normally the first area of your body where anoxia and hypoxia occur. The destructive effects of anoxia and hypoxia are caused when your cells no longer have oxygen to metabolize glucose. When they can’t do this, the cells will be unable to create energy and will slowly die. Four or five minutes without oxygen can cause extreme anoxia that will result in brain death.
Major Anoxia Hypoxia Causes
Doctors and researchers have identified a few types of events as the major anoxia hypoxia causes. There are several different situations and conditions that fall into each of these major categories.
Anoxic Anoxia: This is caused when the air around you does not contain enough oxygen for your body. High altitude sickness is a form of hypoxia that occurs because there is less oxygen at higher altitudes and this affects your brain and the rest of your body. Anoxic anoxia can also occur if you are in an area without any ventilation. As you slowly breathe in more of the oxygen, you will gradually reduce the amount of oxygen in the room until there isn’t enough left for your body to continue to function. Other potential causes of anoxic anoxia include strangulation, drowning, choking, and suffocation.
Anaemic Anoxia: Oxygen is transported through your body by the hemoglobin in your blood cells. If you don’t have enough hemoglobin, or if your hemoglobin is unable to carry enough oxygen, you will suffer from anaemic anoxia. This can happen even if you’re in an environment with safe air that is fully of oxygen. Some causes of anaemic anoxia include iron deficiency and ingestion of sodium nitrite.
Stagnant Hypoxia: Stagnant hypoxia is caused by reduction in your blood flow or blood pressure. Without adequate blood flow, your blood won’t be able to deliver oxygen to the parts of your body that need it. There are many different causes for stagnant hypoxia including stroke, heart attack, and a hemorrhage. If your stagnant hypoxia isn’t addressed quickly it can lead to anoxia in parts of your brain or body that are receiving the least amounts of oxygen.
Histotoxic Anoxia: There are some situations where the air, your blood, and your blood pressure are completely fine, but your cells can’t receive oxygen because of chemicals and poisons in your body. Certain poisons like carbon monoxide and cyanide restrict your body’s ability to process oxygen and can cause hypoxia or anoxia. Other anoxia hypoxia causes include alcohol, acetone, narcotics, formaldehyde, and anesthesia.
